My Thoughts On: Batman V Superman - Part 1 (#166)

Well, Batman V Superman rocked.

MASSIVE SPOILERS.
Obvs.

However, I have a bit of a confession to make. No, it's not that I'm a criminal. Well, not without evidence, heheh. Ahem, anyway, yeah, there's something I have to admit. For the first half of Batman V Superman, I was confused. And a tiny bit bored. I thought it was because I wasn't a big DC fan; sure, I'd watched Man of Steel and knew the basics when it came to Detective Comics (in fact, I'm watching Arrow right now. Season 2, episode 20, and I'm writing this at 5 to 1 in the morning, ha...), but during the film I just didn't know what was going on at times. And then I talked to Blog Buddy about it, who watched the film a day before me, and he said the same.

However, Batman V Superman is not a bad film like all the critics are saying. I heard a lot of sites are only giving it around 30%, or one or two stars out of five. I don't think this is fair though. I'm not a film critic, and I'm not even saying that my opinions on how good a film is are right or even to be agreed with. Batman V Superman is definitely not an amazing film, and it does certainly have its flaws. But I would give it a higher score than what most people are saying right now, probably about 60-70%. The main things that confused my friend and I were the dream sequences with Bruce Wayne in his hideout (or Batcave, I suppose). Like when he dreamed that he was in a cave in Egypt being attacked by thugs wearing a Superman logo, and giant bug-like men flying through the air (I hear this is foreshadowing for a future villain in the DCEU called Darkseid. Like I said I don't know a great deal about DC but apparently Darkseid is like the DC universe's version of Thanos). The film doesn't always make it clear what is a dream and what isn't, and I think that's one of the things which put some people off, including myself. There was also the thing with a guy who appeared in a dream which isn't actually a dream (hard to understand, I know) warning Batman about something to do with Lois Lane and how she is 'the key'. Now, I actually thought about this, and theorised something: the guy in the portal-looking thing looked a little like the Flash. The Flash can turn back time (I'm going to start watching the TV show soon) so perhaps he went back in time to warn Bruce about the future (Justice League Part One does come out next year...) and about how Lois can help to stop Superman in the future, since he probably comes back alive in the upcoming films and turns evil according to some stuff I've read online. Not too clear on the details though. Turns out my idea was right. :^)

Speaking of Superman coming back alive though, yeah, he dead. The death scene totally made me cry, not gonna lie. Then again, I'm a wuss, pretty much all death scenes make me cry. But the ending was a tiny bit confusing also, because the soil lifted up, which left me feeling a teensy bit unsatisfied when the film abruptly ended there because I was thinking, "Is Superman alive? Is he dead? Is he a bit alive? Is he just gonna lie there in that coffin, lifting soil forever and not telling anybody that he's still in the living world?" It actually reminded me of the ending for Avengers: Age of Ultron, when Captain America says the word 'Avengers', and just before he says 'assemble', oooooooh you know he's about to say it, it's on the tip of his star-spangled tongue, he's milliseconds away from paying homage to that famous Avengers saying from the comics, boom, the credits start. It's like the director just wants to troll the viewers, leaving them begging for the next film as they leave the screening. Oh, and I guess while we're on the topic on plotlines that could have been explained better, BvS could have gone into better detail on why Superman was in court exactly and why he was in Africa near the beginning of the film. But that could have just been my fault for not paying attention properly (though you kind of have to pay attention in IMAX film, it's the only thing going on in front of you). I would have also liked a bit more backstory with Alfred and Lex Luthor, but then again I haven't watched the Dark Knight films yet so that would probably help a little.

Actually, I've decided to split this into two parts, because otherwise this'll be an extremely big post and it'll take ages until it's uploaded. When part 2 has been posted, you can find it here.

Midnight post time.
